I love this move. EWTN, as a Catholic TV station, is directly effected by HHS and would have to provide coverage for contraception and sterilization to all employees. The flip side is that they have the ability to mobilize a large number of Catholics to write letters and donate money to support their efforts. Additionally, they have the media outlet to counteract any spin that the administration or media may try to put on the lawsuit. It will be interesting to see this one play out.

TG: What is "in the works" for future projects?

John: I’ve published two books in the Young Chesterton Chronicles, and I am about ¾ of the way through the first draft of the third and final book in the series.

I also have another book, unrealted to the YCC, that will be coming out from Hilllside in April. Titled The King’s Gambit , intended for the 9-12 year old market, it’s a story about a young man’s search for his father while battling otherworldly enemies. I initially wrote it as a bit of a lark, but I got a lot of unexpected encouragement from family, friends, and a few good people at my work.

TG: What authors have personally inspired you?

John: Chesterton, Lewis, Tolkein and Stephen R. Lawhead have been indispensible for teaching me how to write fiction that has a genuine moral compass without getting ‘preachy.’

In terms of learning lessons on how to write better fiction, I learned
more from Stephen King’s "On Writing" than any other single source, fiction or non-fiction.

Most important, I said a number of Novenas from Sts. Francis De Sales and Jude, the patrons of writers and desperate causes, respectively. For both inspiration in my writing and guidance in finding publishers for my work.

TG: Finally, is there anything else you would like to tell our readers about your books, writing, inspiration, and dreams for the future?

John: Ultimately, I’m glad that I can use a story to illustrate the ideological conflicts of the world as I see it, along with with the logical conclusions. I hope that those reading my books will know their worth doesn’t depend on your accomplishments, abilities or how useful you are to those in power. Your value, like that of every person from conception to natural death, comes solely from from the fact that you were made from an infinitely good and loving God.

I’d also love to one hear how a truly gifted writer one day reads my work, and thinks “I can write better than this…” and does.

It’s very nice having a blog www.youngchestertonchronicles.com, and a fan page on Facebook.

Truth be told, I also wouldn’t mind if someone made a movie out of the Gilbert series. A line of action figures wouldn’t hurt either. So would a strategy board game. A video game would be nice, too but… one dream at a time, right? ;)

Komen Vice President Resigns

This is a great article on one of the Washington Post's blogs about Karen Handel resigning from her position as Vice President of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It is circulating around the internet, but I was unable to confirm, that she rejected the severance package because it would have mandated her silence on the Planned Parenthood issue. For her position on this issue, and for previously running for public office with a strong stance on defending Planned Parenthood, I believe that we should view her as a pro-life hero.

Don't Mess with an Archbishop who wears Kevlar!

Aren't you thankful that we live in a country where the government cannot tell religious groups what they can and cannot teach? Imagine if we lived in a nation where the government could tell the Catholic Church that they have to spend their money supporting things which the Catholic faith holds to be intrinsically immoral. Imagine if that same government silenced priests from speaking out against this policy or from even reading a letter to their congregation from the local bishop about the matter. We know the Church has often been silenced in communist and Muslim nations. But we live in the United States of America where the Constitution guarantees us these rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

NO LONGER! By now you are familiar with the Obama Administrations HHS policy, mandating employers provide health coverage for contraception and sterilization (Click here and here to read my two previous posts about HHS). Over the last two weeks, the majority of parishes across the united states have read letters or statements from their bishops about HHS. There was one exception. Catholic Chaplains of US Army Chapels were told that the letter from Archbishop Broglio (Archbishop of the US. Military Archdiocese) could not be read during Mass and could only be handed out afterword. The best that I can make out from available reports is that the letters were not read on the intended weekend. After some correspondence (and it is implied that there was a whole lot of legal posturing) between Archbishop Broglio and the Army's Office of the Chief of Chaplains, the Army agreed that it was a mistake to stop the reading of the letter.*

We are heading down a slippery slope folks!

Interview with Catholic Author John McNichol (Part 1)

I had the opportunity to interview Catholic author John McNichol, via the Web, this week. The following is the first part of a 2 part posting of this interview. I hope that you enjoy it.

TG- What got you into writing? What is your inspiration?

John- In grade school I loved creative writing classes. Taking a one line idea and turning it into a five page story was almost the only kind of academic exercise I genuinely loved. My biggest inspirations have been the kinds of stories I loved as a child; not only fairy tales, but the manic pace of cartoons, the timeless lessons of the Bible and classic Mythology, and the people I’ve cared about and grown with during my life.

TG- Tell us a little about your books?

John- Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a prolific and influential author in the early 20th Century. He wrote and approached life like a swashbuckler fighting pirates in the rigging of a tall ship, and saw life as a grand adventure illuminated by the Light of Christ.

The Young Chesterton Chronicles is a series starring a fictionalized teenage version of GKC, in an alternate history universe where the computer revolution arrived a century early, and young Gilbert gets to have adventures, fight monsters, save the world, and (eventually!) get the girl while interacting with exciting historical figures and fictional heroes and villains.

TG- What is the target age of your readers and what brought you to write for this age group?

John- The target age group was and still is young men from Middle to High school age. Ironically, some of my biggest fans are completely outside this group! I have blogger moms and university professors who have been most encouraging, though there are some older fans of the original works of Chesterton whom I’ve yet to win over.

I ended up writing for this age group for two reasons: first, I teach middle school, and second, I have sons who are middle school age. When I saw how much literature aimed at this group has become agenda based, at times has actively opposed to values we’ve been trying to instill in our children, I thought it was time someone wrote a story for boys that was not only Catholic friendly, but a ‘cool’ read besides.

In other words, to paraphrase CS Lewis, I wrote the books I would have wanted to read, if they’d been around at the time.

U.S. Bishops Speaking Out on HHS, We Need to Speak Out Too!

Many of our bishops are speaking out on HHS, stating that the Catholic Church cannot, and will not, comply with the Obama administration's mandate that churches provide health coverage which includes sterilization and contraception (including some forms which are abortifacient). This is an issue that Catholics need to be heard on. But don't take that on my word. Listen to Bishop Zubik of Pittsburgh:

“It comes like a slap in the face,” writes Bishop Zubik. “The Obama administration has just told the Catholics of the United States, ‘To Hell with you!’ There is no other way to put it … Kathleen Sebelius and through her, the Obama administration, have said ‘To Hell with You’ to the Catholic faithful of the United States. To Hell with your religious beliefs, to Hell with your religious liberty, to Hell with your freedom of conscience.”

“Nobody, not even the president of the United States or anyone who represents him, has the right to say to you and to me as U.S. citizens, as Catholics, or as both: ‘To Hell with You.’ The president and our elected leaders need to hear from you and me and to listen to us NOW.”

A woman's "reproductive freedom" is how President Obama phrases a woman's "right" to kill her unborn child. In reality, reproductive freedom is a woman's choice of weather to have sex or not. Once a couple has engaged in sex and conceived, they have ALREADY reproduced. They have already exorcised their "reproductive freedom." The choice to abort the child has nothing to do with "reproductive freedom", it has to do with choosing to kill or not.

Apple iBooks 2 Announcement: My Thoughts on Catechetical Implications

Apple's announcement today of iBooks 2 will have an amazing impact on education. This has been in the works for a long time. I remember Steve Jobs talking about his vision for revolutionizing textbooks years ago. It looks like it's finally becoming a reality.

The obvious question for me is "How will this impact catechesis?" I watch the video (link below) and see amazing things that we could do to publish interactive catechetical materials. Imagine making Church History exciting to your 7th graders. It's possible. BUT... there is a huge obstacle. Your students have to have iPads. Ouch! Imagine your parish DRE trying to sell this; "Catechism registration will be $80 dollars this year with a small $700 iPad purchase fee and a two year data contract."

Outside of the traditional catechetical setting, there will be great potential. Materials can be written (or designed) with the family that has an iPad in mind. These materials do not need to be for classroom use. They could be written to help parents step into their God-given role as primary educators in the faith. Now that should get the gears turning. For decades we have asked, "How do we get the parents to teach the faith to their children at home?" Maybe this is part of the solution.

The Supreme Court Gets One Right!

The Supreme Court has ruled that religious institutions have the right to hire (or fire) based on the religious beliefs of the candidate applying (or working for them). This is a key decision. What is even better is that it was a unanimous decision.

I completely stumbled upon this by accident. I had been wanting to get a Roku box as part of my move to ditch cable, and when I saw one go on sale I bought it. Unknown to me, EWTN is now available as a Roku channel. Very nice.

What is a Roku Box? It's a set top box, like Apple TV or Google TV, which takes advantage of your high speed internet connection. It plugs into your router and your TV to give you free channels... hundreds of them.. for FREE! You can also use it to connect to paid outlets such as Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu. It can't be any easier. Plug into your TV, plug into your router, plug into power. That's it. When you turn it on the first time, you can select from hundreds of free channels, including EWTN. There is no monthly fee, ever, for Roku. If you add a pay service, such as Netflix, that's different.

There are a few versions of Roku available. I recommend the HD version. It's only $88 now. Remember that there is no monthly fee of any kind. $88.00 for streaming EWTN on your TV. Time to Re-Focus: Make the Craziness of the Season Worthwhile

"It's the most busy time of the year..." Okay, this isn't how the carol goes, but it very well could. Christmas shopping, parties, looking at Christmas lights and somehow we are supposed to fit in all of the regular things on our plate. Purple is becoming less of a symbol of waiting and more of a warning sign to hold on tight because we are throwing it into high gear. We know that we need to slow down and reflect, but it just doesn't seem to happen.

My suggestion: Take a few minutes of quiet (and yes, I know I am asking the impossible here). Reflect on your favorite Christmas memories growing up. What drew you closest to Christ's birth? What drew your family closer to each other? What are the things which you are doing that do not lead you to set the stage for these experiences for your family this year? Can you focus our busyness on the things which are really important? It won't necessarily make you less busy, but it will make it worthwhile.

Newt is a Convert to Catholicism

I am not here to promote any candidate, though I will definitely write about issues now and then. I also admit that I have not spent much time focusing on the Republican Primary as I feel it is crazy that we spend 2 full years focusing on the Presidential Election which takes place every 4 years.

Somehow, I missed the story about Newt Gingrich converting to Catholicism. Following Tony Blair, Laura Ingram, and Jeb Bush. I still have my suspicians about George W. as well. Time will tell.

On any account, I am fascinated by the political conservatives who have recently come into the Church. Mr. Gingrich recently did an interview with the National Catholic Reporter regarding his conversion to the Catholic Church. I found it a very interesting read.

Papal Nuncio to the U.S. Announced!

Our Holy Father has named a new Papal Nuncio to the U.S. This is great news. With an onslaught of bishops about to retire, there is much work to do. There was some thought that the new Nuncio may not be named until closer to the end of the year. I am sure that those in the Nunciature are following the old saying that, "Today we celebrate, for tomorrow we work!"

So who is the newly named Nuncio? I will leave that announcement for the great artisan of the pen, Rocco Palmo...

Do you run into people who think the Catholic Church is against all stem cell research. Often the media does not differentiate between adult and embryonic stem cell research. I am sure that the false impression that this gives that the Church is opposed to all stem cell research is unintentional (sure). Does it matter that the US Bishops have one of the most effective programs to help victims of human trafficking? What about the fact that the USCCB Office of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) is one of the most effective agencies in providing safe shelter to children who may be targeted for human trafficking (we are talking about slavery here)? When asked about what he sees as his biggest challenges in his new assignment in Philadelphia he replied, “The biggest challenge, not just in Philadelphia but everywhere, is to preach the Gospel in a way that captures the imagination of God's people. We need to have confidence in the Gospel. We have to live it faithfully, and to live it without compromise and with great joy.”

Bosco Conference Comes to a Close

The final keynote address has been given. Closing Mass is over. Lunches have been eaten and participants have checked out of the dorms. I sit in the JC Williams Center view of the locked bookstore doors, thus my wallet is safe for another year. Most attendees have left campus except for a small number of us with late flights. There is time now to pray, process, reflect... and write.

The week has been a full one with some of the greatest catechetical minds anywhere speaking on everything from catechetical documents and theory to survival in a parish setting. Some of the presenters included Fr. J. Brian Bransfield, Associate Secretary of the USCCB (Awesome!), Marc Cardaronella (Marccardaronella.com), Fathers Caulle and Cointet from the great Notre Dame de Vie catechetical institute in France, Bill Keimig of the Association for Catechumenal Ministry, Sr. Johanna Paruch of Steubenville's catechetical program, Barbara McAtee of the Diocese of New Orleans, Lucas Pillice of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Gigi Zapian of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and Petroc Willey of the esteemed Maryvale Institute in Englans and editor of The Sower catechetical journal, along with many others.

The level of formation at this conference is always amazing. I have been to every national level youth ministry and religious ed conference which I am aware of in this country, have been through numerous certification programs, and have really sought out professional level formation. This is where I find it. Professional level workshops, rooted in the catechetical documents of the Church and sound methodology.

With certification programs for catechists, youth and young adult ministry, RCIA, high school teachers, and DRE's, there is something at the Bosco Conference for everyone in catechetical ministry. It's the end of day three of the St. John Bosco Conference for Religious Educators at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. While the weather here in Ohio is unbearably hot and humid (heat index hit 107 today) the conference has been worth every stifling trek across the campus. One of the focal themes this year has been the centrality of the person of Christ in everything we do and everything we teach. This is always a central teaching here at Bosco, as it is central to the catechetical documents of the Church. The unique application which has come across strongly this year is that Christ must never be relegated to merely be the topic of one or more lessons, rather Christ must be the point to which every lesson is directed. Christ must permeate everything we teach. As more than one instructor has said this week, after you plan your lesson you should ask yourself, "What does this have to do with Jesus?" If it is not evident to you, it certainly will not be clear to your students.

Note to Catechists from St Francis and Prince of Peace: expect to hear more about this in catechist training this year.

Chaput... On the Move!

I know that I have been a bit behind on my posting. I didn't report the HUGE news this week that one of my heroes Archbishop Chaput, has been moved to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. One can only speculate, and there is no lack of those who are, that this move of one of the Church's most outspoken and orthodox archbishops is a bit of a mission to turn Philadelphia into a Phoenix (pun intended). The once revered archdiocese needs to be risen from the ashes.

A Great Blessing

It was Sunday. My family and I arrived early at the Cathedral. Arriving early for Church is not something we make a habit of doing. As we killed some time by looking around the plaza, I spotted it. A single object of crimson moving across the courtyard. No one else seemed to notice. I motioned to my wife. After a moment of confusion, my wife, 5 kids, mother-in-law, and myself began to converge on the red-clad figure. It must have been a sight! The main part of the massive courtyard was nearly empty. From one side, the Archbishop crossed. From his two o'clock came the onslaught of our Catholic groupie family on a mission to intercept him... and that we did. Those who visit this blog with any regularity know that there are a handful of archbishops and cardinals in the United States of whom I am a huge fan. Archbishop Gomez is one of those men.

I did not get to say much to him. He was friendly and gracious. He was very interested that my mother-in-law is from Texas, as that was his last cathedra, and you could see his love of Texas in his face upon finding out that she was from the Lone Star State. No, I did not get to ask him deep questions of theology or the Church. What I received was far better... he blessed each of my children. We didn't need to ask him. He knew what was most important, and in an instant, I did as well. I will continue to watch the good archbishop and his shepherding of the largest flock on these shores and I will continue to post about it here. Now, however, my previous speculations that he is a deeply prayerful man are no longer hypotheses. I have seen Christ in him, and I pray God will use him mightily to "bring renewal to the Church of Los Angeles", as he referenced in his homily that morning.

400 Austrian Priests Organize Formal Disobedience

I have little patience for things such as this. A diocesan priest takes one vow, obedience to their bishop.

I don't, however, suggest that a sweeping removal of their faculties is what is called for (which I saw someone else online call for). My two cents: I think they should be given a chance to be brought back into the flock. Perhaps three steps:
1st- Their bishop makes a public general statement calling them, as a group, back into obedience.
2nd- the bishop meets individually with those priests still professing to be disobedient in order to try to bring them back into the fold.
3rd- If they still refuse to be obedient to their bishop and the Church, the bishop should make individual decisions on how each priest should be dealt with.

Just my opinion... What do you think???

The Goal of Catechesis

Marc has written another great post on his blog. Recently, I received a email from one of the big catechetical publishing companies touting their new resource page for DRE's. It stated that the goal of catechesis was imparting a knowledge of the Catholic faith. What? You have to be kidding. This is a means (and not the only means) to the end, not the end in itself. Conversion of hearts to Christ is the goal! It seems to me that the majority of the "industry" still doesn't get that. Maybe it's because they have relied upon a secular educational model too heavily, or perhaps it's difficult to write and market "text books" that have the goal of conversion (over-reliance upon textbooks is a whole other issue. Search Marc's site for his take on that and you will know how I feel as well).

I Remember Buying Books at Kirner's in Pittsburgh...

Kirner's Bookstore, a 130 year old religious bookstore in Pittsburgh, was sold at a Sharif's auction for $1,600. I still have books which I bought there when I was in Steubenville in the early 90's. I remember my excitement in finding the writings of Ignatius of Antioch on the shelf. I still have that volume. Remember that we are talking about pre-internet days, so you couldn't just go online and find the Fathers of the Church for free or order a book from Amazon. We visited the Catholic bookstore in every city we went to, hoping to find something new. I remember that Scott Hahn would drive hundreds of miles in the summer to Loome Theological Booksellers and fill up his car. Kirner's was one of three Pittsburgh bookstores we visited often. It's sad that it is gone.

I am sad to say that my once home state of New York has a same sex marriage bill nearing a vote which could redefine marriage in the Empire State.

Online Passwords and Security Issues

I am receiving a growing number of emails and Facebook posts which are obviously links to sites designed to infect the visitors computer with a virus. Most of these links are spread by someone's email being hacked or their computer being infected by a virus. The importance of having a strong password is higher than ever before. Read this article to get up to speed on known attacks against the major Webmail services such asYahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail.

Here are two things that you can do to greatly improve your online security.

Make sure your email password is super secure and is different from other passwords. I will explain below.
Make sure you understand what can make a password more secure or less secure. Do you want a super computer to be able to crack your password in a few hours or over one hundred years? It's simple math.

What is so important about my email password?

Do you have any online financial accounts? They are linked to your email address. CitiBank, US Bank, Band of America... An extremely high percentage of Americans have accounts at one or more of the top financial institutions in the country. Now, what do you do when you forget the password to your online account? You have them email you a new password or link to a page to change your password. If I have your email address and can read your email, I can change your bank account password and have complete access to your accounts. Scary! By the time you figure out you have been hacked, you may have been cleaned out.

Important Password Tips

1- Do not ever use a password that can be found in the dictionary.

2- Do not use people's names (especially pets or family members)

3- Do not use important dates (birthdays, anniversaries...)

4- Mix it up! Use letters (upper case and lower, numbers, and symbols such as * - ( ? ...)

God is Covenant

I am listening to Scott Hahn's book, A Father Who Keeps His Promises. I was struck when Scott said, "God does covenant, because God is covenant." BOOM! Why did I never hear that before? Certainly I must have heard the words. I sat under Dr. Hahn for 18 credit hours in college, have read most of his books, listened to countless CD's, and have heard him speak at over a dozen conferences. If there is anything I feel like I could teach on a moments notice, it's an overview of salvation history from the point of view of Covenant as the central theme. But, somehow, I have missed this most foundational element. God IS covenant!

I teach a similar point in my morality classes when I explain that the moral law (natural or Divine) stems from the very attributes of who God is. For example, God demands us to be truthful because God is Truth and we are created in his image and likeness. This is why when we obey the Commandments we are acting in a way which is more fully human. We are actually conforming to the image and likeness of God which we were created in.

This principle that "God is covenant" is very simple to understand. Follow me on two points:
Point I: A covenant is an exchange of persons. In the Old Testament we see God making covenants with His people. God says "I will be your God and you will be my people." This is much more than a contract where an agreement is made. This is a total giving of self where those making the covenant "I am no longer mine, but now I am completely yours." This can best be visibly expressed in marriage, which is a reflection of the Trinity. I give myself to my wife fully and she fully gives herself to me. We pour out our love and our lives for each other. And when husband and wife give themselves to each other in the marital covenant, as Scott likes to say, "nine months later you might have to give it a name." Their love is perfectly poured out to the point that it becomes a third person, a child.
Point II: God is Three Persons. God the Father, for all eternity, generates the Son, who is the perfect image of Himself (the Father). Father and Son give themselves to each other in perfect love. This perfect pouring out of themselves to each other (this covenant) is a third person, the Holy Spirit. God is, in his very being, covenant!

More later on how that plays itself out in the economy of salvation.
